Hilgay - Summer 2015

Hilgay Village - the River Wissey

Artefact Worshop in Lynn

A workshop in June at King's Court, Chapel Street, King's Lynn (Council Office), gave a timeline and enabled local people to look at prehistoric flint axes, Roman pottery and a brooch and coins, Saxon and medieval finds. Other more exotic finds, such as flints and prehistoric pottery (early Neolithic), from a cave excavation from Trieste, also indicated the date and cultural affinities of finds.

The Workshop was titled, 'Archaeology at your fingertips', and it was part of Adult Learners' Week 2015.

Artefact Worshop in Lynn

A second workshop, also in June was hosted at The Bridge for Heroes, Contact Centre, Clough Lane, King's Lynn. Here volunteers and beneficiaries, joined in handling artefacts, from flint burnt flint, to Beaker barbed and tanged arrowheads, or Roman pottery, to medieval Grimston green-glazed pottery, to Victorian 'Willow pattern' pottery and porcelain from the Officers' Mess at RFC Narborough.

It is hoped a small team might be able to join the Society with the fieldwork planned at Hilgay in the last weekend of July, and first weekend of August. (see other pictures, with people seated looking at timeline and artefacts).
